Power management company Eaton will be exhibiting at the Low Carbon Networks and Innovation Conference taking place at the Aberdeen Exhibition & Conference Centre from the 20th – 22nd October. At stand P5, visitors will be able to find out how Eaton’s power distribution solutions complement and integrate with its wider business offering for the utilities sector.
At the conference Eaton will be playing a part in BEAMA’s ‘Smart World’ stand (the electro-technical industry’s trade association). Members of the association are supplying equipment that shows the ‘real life’ elements of the Smart Grid. Eaton is providing a 93PM UPS that in this application is used as a means of managing power quality on the LV network and gives the capability to provide localised energy storage. The 93PM’s Energy Saver System (ESS) mode automatically and continuously matches the operation of the UPS to the incoming power quality. When required, ESS transitions the UPS seamlessly to double conversion mode and removes any abnormalities in the utility power.
In addition to its ‘Smart World’ role on the Eaton stand will be experts who can discuss the varied ways in which the company services the utility sector. Eaton’s technology and services encompass everything from IMS software for electrical distribution system automation and protection to its main contractor capability when providing power distribution automation and remote management for 10kv transformer stations. Also, Eaton’s Power Xpert, Storage grid-connect inverter offers reliable energy storage and conversion for utility-scale grid connection battery applications.
A key topic of conversation at the event, according to power utilities and networks segment manager, Eaton’s Electrical Sector, Phil Dingle will be cyber security for utilities operators. “The key here,” said Phil, “is understanding the difference between Information Technology and Operational Technology. While IT departments can tolerate downtime in order to maintain their systems OT has to run 24/7. Traditionally, there has been less security focus on OT but there have been some high profile hacks recently and when it comes to firmware updates and user updates how is this done in real time?”
