564 1013 300With just a couple of weeks to go to Northern Manufacturing 2014, all the indications are that the premier event for Northern engineering will once again be packing in the crowds. The show opens on October 1st and 2nd at Manchester’s EventCity, offering around 20% more exhibitors to see this year.

Many of the region’s engineering firms are involved in some aspect of automation and machine building, thanks to the prominence of manufacturing industries in the North – including Scotland and Northern Ireland – such as Food & Beverage and PharmaBio. For them, the Northern Manufacturing Show provides an exceptional opportunity to address a wide range of  design and production issues in one visit.

The Northern Manufacturing & Electronics Show is a very important market for components of all descriptions, making it an intriguing show for engineers as the range of products on show is simply vast. The outstanding exhibitor list includes several of the largest machinery and industrial equipment manufacturers in the world together with a huge selection of major sub-contract companies, taking care of pretty much every area of industry from fabrication to PCB assembly. But every bit as important as acting as a marketplace for the big-ticket hardware, the show is a much-needed focal point for local SMEs to encounter new suppliers and buyers.

Of particular interest to those concerned with machine building, Bernstein returns with its comprehensive range of machine safety sensors, this year demonstrating one of its light-curtain machine safety applications. Kabelschlepp Metool will exhibit examples from its a broad range of cable supports found in machine building and automation roles, everywhere from ink-jet printer carriages to oil rigs.  K-Lacey Cables makes its debut this year, with its vast range of cabling components and bespoke assembly services.

Also exhibiting for the first time, Mini Gears will showcase its power transmission components, as well profiling its recently enhanced ability to manufacture high-precision machined components for specialist markets such as autosport, aviation and the high-end valve industry, machining materials for subsea and topside applications.

pacerPacer will bring its wide range of displays, LEDs, sensors and optoelectronic products to Northern Manufacturing for the first time. Technologies on display comprise of electroluminescent (EL), transparent EL, OLED and TFT LCD, demonstrated alongside robust mobile PDAs and tablets. Pacer’s optoelectronic collection incorporates light and colour sensors, high power and specialist LEDs, thermopiles, pyrodetectors and laser components.

Of Northern’s larger international exhibitors, almost all return in 2014, for instance Faro Technologies, Haas Automation, KUKA Robotics, Amada, Bystronic  and many others. They will be joined by numerous new names, such as US firm SpaceClaim and Cheshire-Based Colneherne, suppliers of precision plain and white metal bearings. Alongside these firms are literally hundreds of vendors delivering a huge number of sub-assemblies, mechanical engineering components, machine vision systems, subcontract metalworking and components.

Trans-tronic, considered one of Europe’s largest providers of wound components, shows a number of items from its comprehensive product line.

DMS Technologies will highlight its range of battery products, many of which are designed for harsh operating environments.

Sub-contract services is the other key area covered by both Southern and Northern Manufacturing. And once again, there is absolutely no shortage of choice or variety in the answers on offer to visitors. Machining and fabrication providers include DJJ Precision Engineering, Orbital Fabrications, Serious Engineering, Dawson Precision Components and many more.

Together with the huge numbers of components and products on display, Northern Manufacturing & Electronics is also a good spot to gain new expertise, courtesy of the free technical seminar programme that runs over both days of the show. A set of one-hour training sessions provided by well respected industry professionals touches on a wide variety of technical and operational issues such as Lean, CE Marking, product development and marketing.
