Fast charging has long been one of the battery industry’s most popular promises – and its biggest trade-off. Push charge rates too hard and cell degradation, reduced cycle life and safety concerns quickly follow. Play it safe, and charging times fall short of modern expectations.

Iontra’s Charge Control Technology challenges that compromise. By rethinking charging control at firmware level, it enables 3C charging with significantly less damage, delivering measurable gains without demanding wholesale redesign.

Unlike traditional constant current, constant voltage (CCCV) charging, Iontra dynamically manages how energy is delivered to the cell in real time. This active control reduces lithium plating, manages internal resistance and improves thermal behaviour – particularly at higher C-rates and in colder conditions.

Crucially, the performance claims are independently validated. Testing by organisations including the National Laboratory of the Rockies, the University of Michigan and Novonix demonstrates clear advantages. In one Novonix study, cells charged at 3C using standard CCCV methods lost 13% state of health, while Iontra-charged cells lost just 4% over the same number of cycles – around three times less damage at the same charge speed.

The technology also offers flexibility. OEMs can tune charging behaviour to prioritise faster charging, longer cycle life or improved cold-weather performance, depending on application needs. And because Iontra’s solution is implemented at firmware level, it can often be integrated without the six to twelve months typically required for cell redesign and requalification.

Damian Semple, Franchise Marketing Manager, Astute Group, commented:

“Battery innovation has spent years stuck between two competing demands: charging speed and long-term reliability. What makes Iontra’s technology so efficient is that it addresses both simultaneously. By controlling charging behaviour more intelligently at firmware level, manufacturers can achieve faster charge rates without accepting the level of degradation traditionally associated with high-performance charging.”

For manufacturers under pressure to deliver better performance without added risk, Iontra presents a smarter path forward.
