It’s hard to believe we are already over a month into the new year and despite more worrying news for the economy, 2013 looks set to be busier than ever for the automation industry.

As usual the year’s trade show season kicks-off with Southern Manufacturing & Electronics which continues to grow every year. That’s followed by the triennial International Materials Handling Exhibition (IMHX) which is also much larger than it was three years ago – see our preview on p12. These growing events have to be good news for industry as a whole, so let’s hope it translates into better economic news as we go through the year.

This is my last editorial comment as editor of Automation before I move on to pastures new and hand the magazine over to my colleague, Joe Bush. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my tenure as editor for the last five years, during which time we’ve certainly witnessed a growth in the take-up of automation in the UK and I’d like to wish Joe the best of luck in his new position.
