Fibre optics are often overlooked as a viable solution to some industrial sensor applications. Considered to be fragile, expensive and complex to operate, in reality, nothing could be further from the truth. Fibre optic sensors are versatile and flexible and provided the “best-fit” solution is selected, in many cases, they offer superior sensing performance to standard photo-electric sensors. Their compact size makes them ideal for mounting in confined spaces, but this is not the only benefit they can offer. Modern fibres are both durable and resistant to damage, unlike traditional glass fibres; they are constructed from plastic and contain multiple cores, which reduce the effect of damage caused by impact. Highly flexible fibres can also be used, which have a bend radius down to 1mm, far superior to most conducting wires used in standard photo-electric sensors. This enables easy deployment and reduces the possibility of damage during installation. Special high temperature rated fibres allow deployment in environments up to 400°C and specially coated fibres allow operation in aggressive chemical conditions, providing sensing solutions in the harshest of situations. Omron manufactures over 1,000 fibre optic variations and a wide range of accessories, ensuring there is the right solution, whatever your application. The latest generation of fibre optic amplifiers provide single button set-up and menu-less operation, allowing configuration in seconds and with very little effort.
