An expert in the design and manufacturing of polymer bearings, linear guides and e-chains, igus has developed the Young Engineers Support (YES) programme in order to share its extensive knowledge with engineering students and lecturers across various UK colleges and universities. The initiative aims to provide students and lecturers with free product samples and reference materials tailored to their needs – for lectures, presentations and projects – whilst offering them the opportunity for sponsorship and to talk to igus’ specialists.

UBRacing is the latest student project to receive the support of igus’ YES initiative. The team, that comprises mechanical engineering undergraduate students at The University Of Birmingham, will challenge universities from all over the world at Formula Student 2014, taking place at Silverstone race track, later this year.

James Waterhouse, a member from UBRacing, commented:“igus has offered great support to our project and has been generous enough to provide us with free samples of bearings to fit in the steering rack of our racing car”.

UBRacing – one of the oldest formula student teams in the UK – has been very keen on receiving the YES support from igus: “igus was very quick in getting back to us and delivering the bearing samples we needed for our car”, commented Mr. Waterhouse. Thanks to YES, the team has had the opportunity to equip their racing car with igus’ state-of-the-art light-weight, self-lubricating and easy-to-fit plastic bearings. In addition, igus’ stock bar has allowed the young engineers from UBRacing to easily machine custom bearings to suit the car design.

Besides UBRacing, igus’ YES initiative has, over the years, helped many other students and lecturers develop a wide range of projects ranging from a football table – featuring igus steep-threaded spindle, linear guide systems and igubal spherical bearing – to a chess computer equipped with igus drylin TR steep thread nuts.

Amongst the many resources offered by YES are product samples, catalogues, flyers and free online tools such a CAD. In addition, igus’ experts are always available to answer technical questions. The YES initiative also offers a comprehensive package of polymer plain bearings and energy chain systems, with a range of material available for free download.
