SEW Eurodrive has launched a new Super Premium Efficiency motor in the IE4 class that can cut energy consumption by up to 50 per cent over conventional designs. The new DRC permanent-field synchronous motor contains integrated drive electronics in an enclosed housing and is designed for flexibility so that it can be directly mounted to various gear unit types, such as helical, parallel-shaft helical and helical-bevel via a flange and pinion shaft.

The new motor compliments the already established Movigear product, the company’s mechatronic drive system, by making its phenomenal energy saving technology available to users of standard gearboxes. DRC can be supplied on new product or it can be used as a retrofit on applications with existing geared motors driven by traditional motor technologies.

Available in two sizes, 1.5kw and 0.55kw, with a nominal speed of 2000rpm, the new DRC motor provides IP65 and IP66 degrees of protection and has a 250 per cent overload capacity. It fits onto SEW Eurodrive’s standard gearboxes from its R, F, K and W ranges, and can be supplied on its own with an IEC shaft and flange.

The flexibility of the DRC motor makes it perfect for use in a wide range of applications including logistics, airport logistics, automotive manufacture, food and drinks manufacturing, and construction equipment. It is the optimal, energy efficient solution for belt, chain and link-belt conveyors, and by adding an optional brake it is suitable for use with inclining tracks and hoists.

SEW Eurodrive was one of the first companies to begin developing energy efficient products. The range of solutions now includes the DR modular motor system that can meet any regional efficiency regulations with millions of drive combinations, the mechatronic drive system Movigear and now the new DRC motor.

The DRC motor comes only two years after the introduction of the Movigear mechatronic drive solution, a system that combines the gear unit, motor, frequency inverter and communications system in one compact housing. Movigear is also a solution that helps customers reduce energy consumption by up to 50 per cent compared to conventional drive technology.

As well as cutting operating costs and reducing CO2 emissions Movigear and the new DRC motor both help to improve the quality of the working environment since both units are designed without a fan, which reduces noise. In a conventional drive system a considerable amount of noise is created by air swirls and the vibrations of the fan guard.

This is particularly desirable in the food industry, clean room environments and pharmaceuticals since the geometric, smooth surface design, with the absence of air swirls, prevents the build up of dirt and reduces the need for cleaning. In fact the smooth, hygienic design makes the units virtually self cleaning.

The requirements for companies to comply with energy efficiency legislation varies in different countries, and so, to help make things easy, SEW Eurodrive has developed a simple International Efficiency (IE) guide available as a free iPhone app. The app can be downloaded from the Apple iTunes Store and provides a current overview of international guidelines regarding energy efficiency and industrial drives.

It provides easy access to every country’s regulations on energy efficiency and tells the user the date when a particular energy efficiency class becomes mandatory in the country selected. The user can then get information on SEW Eurodrive’s suitable energy efficient drive technology that will provide the desired level of efficiency.
