3D scanning experts, Physical Digital will be providing sponsorship and 3D scanning services to West Surrey Racing for the BTCC 2017 season. The team has already 3D scanned the WSR BMW engine and provided high-accuracy data to the race engineers in time for them to make alterations and improvements to the engine before the season starts.

Ending last season on a high, with the double achievement of the 2016 BTCC Constructors’ title and the Teams’ Championship crown, WSR has positioned itself strongly for success in 2017. With the signing of three race-winning drivers, two of whom have won championship titles, the WSR team, led by Principal Dick Bennetts, is tipped as a strong contender in 2017.

Rob Collard remains with WSR for the tenth season in a row, having enjoyed his most successful year in 2016, twice winning races but narrowly missing the overall driver’s crown. Joining him are teammates Colin Turkington, returning to WSR after two years away, alongside Andrew Jordan, new to the Sunbury-on-Thames team.

Revving up for action at BTCC launch

The season launch is traditionally the date when the final entry list is confirmed, alongside the unveiling of new cars and liveries. The WSR livery is pictured above, on Colin Turkington’s number 4 entry.

Drivers were introduced to the waiting media in Donington Park’s Paddock Suite, followed by a full line-up on the grid and the ‘Class of 2017’ photoshoot. At the launch, BTCC Series Director Alan Gow confirmed a full complement of 32 drivers for the race series, of whom 50% have won races, meaning that it is likely to be an unpredictable season.  A pre-season test drive to delight the public followed in the afternoon, giving a hint of the thrills and spills to come in the subsequent races of the 2017 season. The WSR cars performed well in front of the waiting crowds and further pre-season testing will follow before the first round of racing at Brands Hatch on 1-2 April.

Commenting on the day, Dick Bennetts, WSR’s Principal, stated: “We have an incredibly strong driver line-up, with Colin, Andrew and Rob all used to winning races and fighting for titles. Our aim is, as usual, to fight for victories at every event and challenge for all three championships.” Tim Rapley, Physical Digital’s founder and CEO, said, “I am delighted to be providing sponsorship and technical support to West Surrey Racing, which has proved itself to be a highly successful team. The optical measurement we provide will enable the WSR engineers to make improvements which could mean the difference between the winner’s podium and the rest of the field. We wish West Surrey Racing all the best for the 2017 season.”
