The new capacitive sensors from ifm solve the setting problem

Often a capacitive sensor is used to detect one product inside a container, so getting the sensitivity set right in the first place is critical.  Many attempts over the years with potentiometers and pushbuttons have tried to help users get this right, but none have been perfect.  Using a microprocessor and pushbuttons is often too complex, an instruction manual is needed, but that’s not always practical.  Using a potentiometer can be more intuitive, but still not ideal.  “Turn it up until the output is on, then down until it goes off.”  This method usually works, but the user has no feedback of the actual setting. Is it just borderline, so a deposit on the sensor will cause a false trip after a few days? Or is it robust and won’t need re-adjustment?  There’s no way of knowing – until now.

The new latest capacitive proximity sensor from ifm electronic features a simple visual setting aid.  As you would expect, the output status is indicated by an amber LED, but either side of this indication are several green LED’s that show where the sensitivity setting has been made when the pot was turned. Closer to the output LED means there’s little margin of error. Conversely, further from the output LED means the setting is robust and the signal can wander without the output switching and causing false trips. 

These new capacitive sensors come in a variety of versions, in both M18 and M30 sizes, with up to 30mm or 40mm sensing respectively.  Users can choose between programmable versions capable of PNP or NPN switching, normally open or normally closed, or fixed versions, and there are also options of M12 connector or fixed cable.

Other features are also quite remarkable; the IP rating goes up to 69K and the target medium can be as hot as 110°C.  

Naturally all versions have IO-Link functionality, allowing remote setting of all the features mentioned here, and more besides, plus external storage of the set value.
