Surge protectors in the new VPU AC range from Weidmüller save time, money and space while offering outstanding protection that meets the latest European and North American standards, including UL1449, Ed.4. They also have a novel pre-warning feature that makes it easier than ever for users to achieve uninterrupted protection for their equipment.
When used in circuits rated at up to 315 A, VPU AC surge protectors do not need a secondary fuse, which, as well as saving the cost of the fuse, reduces installation time and the panel space needed to accommodate the components. The new surge protectors also feature designed-in co-ordination, which further reduces the need for external components by making it unnecessary to provide decoupling between Type I, II and III devices.
Installation is fast and straightforward, as the devices incorporate a locking clip that holds them securely in place on a standard mounting rail, but also offers easy removal with an ordinary screwdriver.
The optional three-stage status display used in VPU AC surge protectors allows the condition of the devices to be checked at a glance. A green indication shows that the device is healthy and operating normally, while an amber pre-warning indication shows that it has been exposed to high surge energy and, although it is still providing protection, it should be replaced as soon as possible. A red indication shows that the device has reached its design limit for energy absorption and should be replaced immediately. Pluggable arresters allow for secure operation but simple replacement without the need to disturb the wiring.
VPU AC surge arrestors also have a volt-free contact that operates along with the amber pre-warning indication. This can be used to activate a remote alarm when the device is in need of replacement. These features facilitate effective preventative maintenance and help users to ensure that they achieve continuous 24/7 protection for their equipment.
While the integral status indicator meets all normal operational needs, some standards, including IEC 62305, stipulate that functional testing must carried out periodically in line with a prescribed schedule. To facilitate this, Weidmüller offers its V-Test device, which has been specifically developed to verify the condition of VPU surge protectors.
Surge protection devices in the VPU AC range are available for Type I, Type II and Type III applications. They comply with the requirements of IEC 61643-11/DIN EN 61643-11 and can be installed in systems conforming with IEC 61643-12/VDE V0675-6-12 and IEC 62305-4 / VDE 0185-4. As they also fully comply with the requirements of UL1449 Ed.4, they are an ideal choice for global applications.
